Protecting your card

Top tips to avoid card fraud include:

  • Always keep your cards in your possession and never let them out of your sight
  • Never let anyone else know your Personal Identification Number (PIN)
  • When using a cash machine or using your card in a shop, beware of anyone trying to watch you enter your PIN
  • Only deal with reputable companies when using your card for purchases over the phone or through the Internet
  • Check your sales voucher to make sure the total is correct before you sign/enter your PIN and keep your copy safe

Paying by card is most likely to be the best and most frequently used payment option and more and more customers everyday are opting to stay clear of the busy shopping centers and choose internet shopping as a stress free alternative. The annual ‘Be Card Smart Online’ campaign helps raise awareness of the simple steps you should take when shopping online.

The campaign highlights four key pieces of advice:

We want to ensure you feel confident and safe when using your card in ATM machines at home and abroad. Here are some top tips to keep you safe:

  • Try to use ATM’S which are positioned in busy, well lit areas and if you spot anyone suspicious hanging around do not use it.
  • Fraudsters use devices to steal your card details and PIN so before you use an ATM, look for any signs of tampering or damage.
  • Always have your card to hand and ready to use. Looking through your purse or wallet could leave you open to distraction by a fraudster trying to steal your card.
  • If your card is retained call us immediately
