At smile ensuring that we help you to stay safe from scams is extremely important to us. Anyone can fall victim to a scam, and with new scams appearing all the time one of the best forms of prevention from fraud scams is awareness and knowing what to be on the lookout for

Top tips to avoid falling for a scam:

  • Never share all your bank or security details. Remember; smile will never contact you by any means and ask for your full security details, to divulge your PIN, arrange to collect your card or tell you to move your money into a safe account.
  • Be alert to telephone scams supposedly from the Police, the Bank or any other organisation – Stop and think, what is it they are asking you to do, what information are you being asked to provide, is there a sense of urgency or are you being told to act fast. If you do receive an unexpected call and want to check the person’s identity use a different landline or mobile, as the fraudster might stay on the line.
  • Do not assume a call is genuine by the caller ID information. Fraudsters often clone the telephone number of the organisation they want to impersonate and make it appear on the caller ID display of the individual's phone. 
  • Never send or transfer money to anyone you do not know or trust. You cannot win money or a prize for something you have not entered. You should never have to pay an upfront fee to claim a prize and you should never be asked to use your own bank account to receive and move money as part of your job description.  
  • Beware of any employer promising ‘get rich quick’ or ‘earn thousands working from home’. Often these fraudulent companies will not reimburse you for the work done or trick you into paying for expenses incurred such as postage and phone calls. Employers should pay you, not the other way round.
  • Be alert to requests that involve transferring or sending refunds or overpayments back to an unknown person or business, or making a change to the beneficiary bank account details set up for automated payments such as BACS or Standing Orders.

  • Always check your statements and reconcile your accounts regularly using online banking, report any unrecognised transactions immediately.
  • Remember - If something sounds too good to be true, then it is normally a scam - if you are in any doubt always double check.
