The Co-operative Banking Group
The Co-operative Banking Group is part of The Co-operative Group, the UK's largest consumer co-operative. We are the group of businesses that includes The Co-operative Insurance and The Co-operative Bank including smile and Britannia. Find out more about:
Can an organisation that conducts its business in a socially and environmentally responsible manner also be consistently profitable? We believe it can. In fact we believe that, in the years to come, the only truly successful businesses will be those that achieve a sustainable balance between their own interests, and those of society and the natural world.
We have designed an area for institutional investors and analysts interested in the organisation, and to provide information about its treasury, debt and wholesale activities. The site also provides information regarding other brands within The Co-operative Group covering retail, commercial and subsidiary activities. If you are located in the United States, some content may be restricted / unavailable in accordance with US Securities regulations.
We employ staff both at our Head Office in Manchester, and throughout the UK. So if you would like the opportunity to further your career, or even to build one from scratch, perhaps we are the right place for you.
These pages have all the information you'd expect to find, like press releases, business facts plus views on industry issues and relating to financial issues.
Sponsorship activity across our group of businesses is wide ranging and diverse, incorporating ethical and charitable causes through to sport and arts sponsorships.
ethical policy and sustainability reporting
smile, as part of The Co-operative Bank, is still the only UK clearing bank with a customer-led Ethical Policy. So our customers can be sure their money will never be investing in companies that pursue profits at the expense of their social and environmental responsibilities.
In 1992, The Co-operative Bank launched its ethical policy. From day one, it reflected the ethical concerns of our customers, after all we never forget that it’s their money that’s being invested.
Since 1992, The Co-operative Bank and smile have withheld over £1.3 billion of their customers’ money from businesses whose activities conflict with the policy. We’ve said no to:
- over £583 million of loans to businesses that conflicted with customer’s environmental concerns
- over £257 million to businesses that conflicted with customer’s ethical concerns for animal welfare
- over £369 million of loans to businesses that conflicted with customer’s concerns for human rights and international development.
As a co-operative business, we believe in ethical values and in putting our money where our mouth is. We have worked on numerous campaigns and projects all over the world as we put our ethics into action to make a difference. We document this by producing a report providing a ‘warts and all’ account of our economic, social and ecological impacts.
