Direct Debit

What is a Direct Debit?

A Direct Debit is an agreement between you and an organisation. It allows them to take regular payments from your account. Unlike standing orders, the amount isn't always fixed, so it can vary from payment to payment.
For this reason, Direct Debits are perfect for paying things like utility bills and credit card payments which can vary from month to month.

To see a list of your Direct Debits, along with other payments from your account, select your Profile.

The Direct Debit is set up by the company you have made an agreement with. You'll need to give them your account number, sort code and the name of your bank, and they will set up the Direct Debit instruction.

You can sort your direct debits and standing orders into date or alphabetical order.

  • Log into your account.
  • From Your Accounts page, select the account you wish to sort your direct debits and standing orders, for by clicking 'View Account'.
  • Select Planned Payments from the fourth tab across the page.
  • On the right hand side, you can toggle between sorting in Date order or by Recipient

Direct Debits will leave your account on the due date as per your agreement with the company (please note that Direct Debits are only processed on working days).

The recipient on your Direct Debit is the name given to us by the company claiming the Direct Debit. In most cases, it will match the name of the company on your agreement.

It is possible for the name quoted on a Direct Debit claim to differ from the company name, and in some cases a Direct Debit scheme may be operated by a different company on behalf of the company you’re paying.

If you’re unsure about any company claiming Direct Debits from you, you should contact us.

Your reference is a code unique to your Direct Debit, provided by the company who are claiming the payment.

Its purpose is to identify your payment so they can be matched to your account. It is usually your account number or customer number with that company.

Yes, you can cancel your Direct Debit at any time, but it may not be possible to stop a payment on the same day as it is due. If you want to cancel a Direct Debit, you have until 9pm the Business Day before the payment is due to debit your account.
In the event that you need to cancel a Direct Debit that has debited your account that day, you have until 7pm to cancel this.
We also recommend you inform the company claiming the Direct Debit that you wish to cancel it.

You can cancel your Direct Debit at any time using online banking or our mobile app.

To do this in online banking:

  1. Log in to online banking.
  2. Select the account with the Direct Debit you want to cancel.
  3. Go to 'Scheduled payments'.
  4. Scroll to 'Direct Debits'.
  5. Select the Direct Debit you want to cancel.
  6. Select 'delete'.

Mobile app:

  1. Log in to the mobile app.
  2. Select ‘Pay & Transfer’
  3. Select the account you wish to view
  4. Select 'View or delete scheduled payments'
  5. Choose the Direct Debit you want to cancel
  6. Select 'Cancel this Direct Debit'.

If you're not registered for online or mobile banking, you can also contact us to cancel a Direct Debit.

You'll have different reference numbers for each Direct Debit you set up, so you can always match up the correct one. If you’re still unsure, we recommend you ask the company claiming the Direct Debit to give you the correct reference number.

Cancelled Direct Debits will be removed from your list by the next working day.
Please contact us if a cancelled direct debit still appears on your account after one working day.

Please note, in cases where a Direct Debit due date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the payment will happen on the first working day after.
